RECE RECE 23 DEC 12
the undersigned Sanitary Inspectors on salaries
of £165 to £230 and £240 to £270 respectively, beg most
respectfully to submit this, our humble petition, in the hope
that you may be pleased to forward it on our behalf for the
kind consideration of His Excellency the Governori
For some years we have found our salaries to be
inadequate to cope with the ever-increasing cost of living and
high rents, and the struggle we have had to make ends meet has
been no easy one. We are being compelled to live in Chinese
flats, which lack even the average comforts and convenience,
and the surroundings are invariably most insanitary. You, sir,
with your knowledge of Chinese and their mode of living, will
doubtless agree that Chinese tenements are undesirable dwell-
ings for officers, their wives and families. Not only has the
cost of living and housing increased, but the prices of every-
day necessities have reached almost exhorbitant figures. We are
almost unable to meet present-day demands, and we are compelled
to approach you, sir, and humbly ask you to recommend to His
Excellency that our salaries be increased to such an extant
that our present trying circumstances may in some measure be
mitigated.
1st.
We, your humble petitioners, pray that His Excellency will graciously grant our application as from the "of
January, 1912.
